Male Breast Reduction

A chiseled, squared-off chest appearance is the masculine ideal. But for men living with gynecomastia, a condition that can result in a fuller or more feminine chest appearance, this ideal look may seem impossible to achieve. In Seattle, breast reduction at Puget Sound Plastic Surgery is helping men improve the appearance of their chest and giving them an enhanced sense of confidence both in and out of clothing.

Before surgery, the underlying cause of your gynecomastia needs to be pinpointed and treated. But even with treatment, some men are left with feminine breasts that can be reshaped only through surgery. By performing male breast reduction, Seattle plastic surgeon Dr. Braden Stridde is able to reduce the excess glandular and fatty tissue that can give the male chest an unmasculine appearance.

The Causes of Gynecomastia

A feminized chest appearance can occur for many reasons. For some young men and adults, the condition resolves itself over time, but others continue to have round, protruding breasts for many years. Common causes for this condition include:

  • Puberty
  • Drug use or abuse (including steroids and drugs with estrogen or similar compounds)
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Genetic disorders
  • Aging

Your first step in treating gynecomastia is understanding its root cause. After proper treatment, cosmetic surgery can revise the appearance of the chest if feminine-looking breasts remain.

Your Male Breast Reduction

This surgery is customized for each patient to address individual needs. For men with excess glandular tissue, Dr. Stridde makes a small incision along the edge of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) or under the breast and surgically removes this tissue. Other patients simply have a large amount of fibro-fatty tissue, which is best removed through a Seattle liposuction procedure. The latest Smartlipo™ technology offered at Puget Sound Plastic Surgery is particularly effective at treating gynecomastia. These methods also can be combined to create a more attractive and masculine chest.

Recovery after Surgery

Most male breast reduction patients feel some discomfort and soreness for a few days after surgery, and will experience a degree of bruising and swelling. Wearing a support garment will help keep swelling in check and protect your surgical results. The majority of swelling and bruising should resolve within a few weeks but it may take up to three months before your final look is revealed.

Dr. Stridde advises patients to reduce activity for a few days and gradually resume their usual activities when they can be performed comfortably. Heavy exercise or activities that could impact the chest should be avoided for at least a month after surgery. After recovery is complete, male patients can expect their results to last many years.

Breast reduction can have a huge positive impact on a man's life and looks.
