Your Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction may be performed under general anesthesia, under conscious sedation with local anesthesia, or with oral sedation and local anesthesia, depending on the amount and number of areas being treated. At our practice in Seattle, we use tumescent liposuction, which infuses the area with an anesthetic solution, greatly reduces discomfort, bleeding, and bruising. We offer ultrasonic liposuction with LipoSelection® technology by VASER® or laser liposuction using Smartlipo™ laser liposuction technology. These technologies utilize a specially selected laser energy beam or ultrasonic sound waves to break up fat cells without disturbing surrounding connective tissues. The emulsified fat can be removed with gentle suction through tiny incisions, providing a more smooth and even result with less bruising than traditional methods. Incisions are closed with fine sutures before dressings, and depending on the treatment area, foam padding and support garments are applied. These garments must be worn continuously the first 2 weeks after surgery, and as much as possible the following 2 weeks.
Recovery after Surgery
Varying amounts of bruising, discoloration, and swelling should be expected in the areas that have been treated. After receiving liposuction, patients can expect a moderate degree of discomfort and pain, and there may be some temporary numbness in the treated areas. Much of the discoloration and swelling should resolve in the first two weeks, but further maturation, softening, and decrease in swelling will occur slowly over a 2 to 3 month period.
