Breast Augmentation for Seattle Area Residents
Breast augmentation is an elective surgical procedure
that is performed to increase breast size and improve breast shape. It
may be performed when the breasts fail to develop to a desired size or
fullness, or when there is loss of breast shape and fullness, a problem
that can occur following pregnancy or weight loss.
Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently
performed procedures at Puget Sound Plastic Surgery.
We do not feel that there is only a single preferred
approach to breast augmentation. Individuals and breasts
come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and people
have different preferences and priorities; therefore
we take an individualized approach to breast augmentation.
A skilled surgeon should be familiar with the various
implant types and surgical approaches in order to best
meet each patient’s needs. After a thorough discussion
with each patient, we arrive at a decision regarding
implant size, shape, incision location, and position
above or below the muscle. We will make recommendations
or state our preferences, and we will take the time
to explain to you the various options and trade-offs.
Sometimes we may recommend an additional procedure
such as a breast lift in order to achieve an optimal
appearance. By taking an individualized approach to
breast augmentation, Puget Sound Plastic Surgery consistently
achieves excellent results and the greatest patient
satisfaction.

Breast Lift
Over time, conditions such as pregnancy or nursing, weight
loss, and the effect of gravity, can take their toll on the shape of a
woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts can lose
their shape or firmness and begin to sag. For patients who would like to
restore the shape and position of their breasts, Puget Sound Plastic Surgery
offers a surgical procedure known as breast lift, or mastopexy.
This breast lift procedure carries the trade-off that in exchange for
an improved breast shape and appearance, there will be surgical scars
on the breast surface. These scars will fade over time, but will not
disappear completely. Generally, the greater the lift, the more extensive
the scars. Sometimes we are able to employ the Binelli or periareolar
type of breast lift at Puget Sound Plastic Surgery. The periareolar lift
limits the scar to just around the areola, making it much less visible.
This type of breast lift is most often used in combination with breast
augmentation, where the breast implant helps to fill up some of the loose
skin. While a breast lift procedure will initially restore fullness to
the upper breasts making them appear more "perky", there is
normally some settling of tissue that occurs following the procedure
with some loss of the upper breast fullness. By combining a breast augmentation
(implants) with a breast lift for Seattle area patients, more sustained
fullness of the upper breast can be achieved. When you come in for a
breast lift consultation at Puget Sound Plastic Surgery, we will thoroughly
discuss your various options to help you decide on the procedure that
best meets your interests and circumstances.

Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is usually performed for women who are
troubled by very large sagging breasts that restrict their activities and
cause them physical discomfort. In most cases, breast reduction surgery
isn't performed until a women's breasts are fully developed, however it
can be done earlier if the breasts are causing serious discomfort. Most
patients state that they experience immediate improvement in their symptoms
following breast reduction surgery. They also feel better about their appearance
and are able to increase their activity level.
Breast reduction is usually covered by medical insurance, but most plans
require certain criteria to be met before insurance coverage is confirmed.
You should check with your insurance plan regarding the limitations of
your plan. An office consultation is needed to assess your specific circumstances
and to determine if you will likely qualify for a reduction procedure.
Breast reduction surgery is generally performed as outpatient surgery.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes from two
to four hours depending on each person’s needs. There will be scars
on the breast after the surgery, which will typically fade and improve
over time. The scars are located around the areola, extending below the
areola, and within the fold underneath the breast. They can be considered
a trade-off one accepts in exchange for relief of symptoms, and improved
breast size, shape, and position. Most patients find that the procedure
results in less discomfort than expected and they are usually able to
return to usual daily activities within two weeks. The surgery is performed
in such a way that sensation in the nipple area is usually preserved
and the ability to breast feed after the surgery can remain intact, however,
each person’s circumstances may differ. These issues will all be
thoroughly reviewed during your consultation. Breast reduction patients
typically have a very high level of satisfaction with the results of
their surgery.

Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction can be a positive and healing experience
for women who have lost part or all of a breast to cancer or who were born
with a breast deformity. Breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast’s
shape and can provide symmetry to the body for a woman who has undergone
a mastectomy.
Dr. Stridde has extensive experience in many breast reconstruction
techniques. These may include the use of a saline or gel implant, or
might involve one of several procedures that use the body’s own
tissues to reconstruct a breast. While breast reconstruction can be very
important for a patient’s emotional well being, the complete and
comprehensive treatment of their breast cancer is of the highest priority.
We want to be sure that breast reconstruction does not in any way interfere
with adjuvant treatment, and for this reason breast reconstruction is
usually performed on a delayed basis after an individual completes chemotherapy
or radiation therapy, which is often recommended following mastectomy.
